The Palio

The Sienese are dead serious about the Palio. This is a horse race
that takes place in July and in August. The jockeys ride bareback and
the horse can still win even if it has lost its rider. I would have
found it hard to believe without seeing the pictures but in fact the
Palio takes place in il Campo. They actually lay out earth on the
outer portion (yellow line on picture) and the spectators are in the
middle ( red arrows).
These are photos are pictures of pictures so the quality may be
especially crappy.
